543.

Story Line number 543 covers the story of a forenoon's visit to Shotley Gate by the outside broadcasting unit of BBC Radio Suffolk, to talk to an assembled crowd about the former HMS Ganges site both in the past and in the future. For reasons which have been extant for many scores of months, Health and Safety requires the site to be closed and so the 'crowd' assembled outside the Main Gates at the end of Caledonia Road.

Mark Murphy set the scene and dictated the schedule, which included talking to Members of the Ganges Association either present of via 'phone links; to a Member of the Borough Council who will dictate the fate of the old Establishment; to a Member of the Development Company whose plans to date have been turned down; to Suffolk's South MP; Shotley Parish Council; to Residents of Shotley Gate, Shotley and the Peninsular; to owners of boats moored at the Shotley Marina, and to those who joined the group out of interest and a desire to see the area developed for the good of all.

Interviews were interrupted by news casts; popular music; talk of no consequence; competitions; trivia; traffic news; event news.  In this presentation I have edited out the irrelevant [although one or two bits remain because it gives a timing of how far the radio forenoon show had got from the beginning at 0900] during a period of home convalescing, getting over a second total hip replacement [with complications - fractured pelvis] conducted in Suffolk just 30 odd miles from Shotley, a week before on the 21st August.

I was going to edit out some of the absolute crap spoken by some of the ex-Ganges personnel present, but that would have unbalanced the programme, so I have left it all in. It remains an on-going pathetic situation that much of what is said or written by the Association Membership, must be considered as apocryphal.  Rather  surprised to hear that the Association Treasurer wasn't at all sure about when boys became juniors mixing up school leaving ages of the 1970's [and the reason why the Establishment closed] with name changes of 1956, ten years before he joined! Incidentally, my critical comments refer to those who spoke who had trained at Ganges in the 1970's, a time when the 'Spirit' of Ganges had long gone with only the 'Myths' remaining. The guy who lived in Kent and had travelled from Norfolk to Suffolk to be at the gathering, was not a boy seaman, but a junior seaman, and even in the 1970's, pigs were not six foot tall! As for the guy who told us all about the changing of kits, each with a full muster outside the mess, culminating many hours later through the night with a full kit muster whilst others, in adjacent messes were about to hear 'Charlie' after a good nights kip, should understand that such punishments, usually enshrined as "Group Punishments" were legally outlawed in the navy and nationally well before his time in the navy, with severe judicial punishments for those who broke or condoned the law breaking. To many ex Ganges personnel, staff, ship company and trainees, the very words "Shotley Routine" were a personification of COLLECTIVE PUNISHMENT. To trainees of the 1970, Shotley Routine was a thing of past, extant, though surprisingly rarely, during the post war years. Prior to the demobilisation of all boys from all BTE'S [Boys Training Establishments] wherever situated in 1940 to areas deemed safe from German Bombings [Isle of Man for example, but also places in Scotland and Wales] the same group punishment was awarded but was not always named the same year in year out, with the most common expression being CCC [Class Correction Curriculum]  especially post WW1. Very few ex Ganges Juniors of the mid-1960's onwards would have witnessed a class under Shotley Routine out on the internal roadways of the Establishment, and the highest occurrences were to be seen throughout the 1950's. QUOTE from an interviewee on the programme, Lots of Borstal Boys coming through in 1958 UNQUOTE- what absolute bilge - see http://godfreydykes.info/EX_BORSTAL_AND_EX_APPROVED_%20SCHOOL_BOYS_JOINING_THE_NAVY.htm {Moved to a new website!} Between 1953 and 1960 only four such youths joined the navy and only one did well enough to succeed further! Without exception, they were post-16¾ years, the majority aged 17+ and thus ineligible for Ganges/St Vincent but did serve as BOY SPECIALS in HMS Wildfire at Chatham - see this http://www.godfreydykes.info/THE_CHANGES_IN_LEAVE_ALLOWANCE_POST_WW2_HMS_GANGES_INTER_ALIA.html {Moved to a new website!}   The Borstal system was a qualified failure, much to the relief of the armed forces in general.

One thing that never now ceases [and thus I suspect, will never ever cease] to amaze me is that the knowledge and understanding of the CHRISTMAS MEMORANDUM OF 1902, which can be found on this page http://www.godfreydykes.info/HMS_GANGES_AT_HARWICH.htm {Moved to a new website!} scrolling down to approximately a quarter way down the page and beginning reading at the heading "BUT FIRST WE NEED TO ASCERTAIN WHY A MAST IN A SHORE ESTABLISHMENT?, is not known of and therefore not understood by run-of-the-mill Ganges orientated people. Paradoxically, it is known to those who have nothing whatsoever to do with the Ganges Cult but who have attended my lectures and have bothered to read the fine detail on my web pages. Because of this, the very core of understanding how Ganges and the Mast came about, is not known and the level of ignorance is quite literally overwhelming and disturbing. Understanding the relationship between the "single gymnasium" and and a "training icon" - in the case of Ganges, firstly the STRIDE and then the MAST- is paramount to all that Ganges stands for, followed of course by a pan-navy Directive that the "single gymnasium" had to be supplemented by "gymnasia" {more than one gymnasium in each shore establishment - Ganges had two extra gym's built as a consequence of the Directive] which led to the formation of the PTI's Branch and the cessation of Mast Training almost before it had officially started on terra firma. If only a few would read what the archives reveal, particularly this file if no other http://www.godfreydykes.info/HMS_GANGES.htm, {Moved to a new website!} then at least the effort of publishing the detail would not have been in vain!

Other aspects of the Ganges Organisation [website] are also wrong and misleading, and even a non-member visitor's trained eye [and who knows what a member might see behind his/her password] can pick out the errors which occur! One area which always attracts an audience no matter what the circumstances are/were, are deaths, especially when the deceased is known to oneself and may have been in the distant past, a colleague or a class-mate.  For some macabre reasons, we all want to know who has passed-on, when and what their ages [usually relative to one's own] were at the time of the death. Sadly, as in all walks of life, the grim reaper takes us one by one in a most unfair and illogical pattern [lateral thinking on choice comes to mind] some very young often in their prime, and some very old and frail who are known to wish death upon themselves to escape the tortures of life. Whatever, irrespective of what they may leave as tangible assets and their often pathetic artefact, we can do them proud by keeping accurate and relevant records of their passing.  If and when we do not, we are doing nothing short of letting them down. I find the Ganges CTB does this. There are many errors chief among which are:-
a.  Repeated entries
b.  Incorrect official numbers
c.  Dates of death out of sequence
d.  Dates of joining the navy are wrong
e.  Entry hidden by the poppy which appears after each name
f.  CTB Dates missing
g.  .....and possibly others which I have not noticed.
Just as examples to support the list a to f above, I submit the following errors. There are other errors!
a1.  Pages 6/7 - Dennis E Cooper
b1.  Page 1 - Jack [John] Thorpe. The letter 'X' in an O.N., stopped on April 1 1953 with the start of O.N., @ 925000: also Page 1 - John H Allison. his O.N., is totally wrong both prefixes, and that there are only 5 digits in his number: also Page 2 - Ken Bennions - who joined in 1951, couldn't possibly have had an O.N. , number of 934***. It is more probable that his number was 904***.  These people are well known to me [as are others] and it is pathetic that their details are so shoddily portrayed. If the webmaster doesn't understand how the navy works, he should ask, or give the job to somebody who does! Others, not known to me are Peter GAMBLE who joined in 1955.  His number is obviously 952626 and not 052626 as stated.  Many in the Ganges Association hold dear their RECRUITMENT NUMBER. This, to men of my generation [1953 entry] is alien. It is arguable that 'recruitments' were used but never stated, with a trickle, every now and again, mentioned in 1954, increasingly so In 1955. Almost coincident with the change from 'boys' to 'juniors' in mid-1956, we see recruitment 100 emerge and thereafter, recruitment numbers became more stated in the public domain. although January 1957 saw 'recruitment 1 restart the hitherto almost secretive list.   This introduced 'recruitments' in a piecemeal fashion, some of them applying to the boys/juniors coming to HMS Ganges.  These were, to say the least, willy nilly, taking into account all recruits, recritments, adult and juniors and in all establishments/recruiting authorities and branch entries. The 50th recruitment is apparent at the time of the closure of Ganges. Official numbers after the 1st April 1953 [when the letter 'x' was for all time thereafter demoting to history] ran a similar run of numbers without a set pattern. It wasn't the case that numbers ran consecutively where they ran to the end of a series e.g., 999999 and the next new recruit assumed the number 000001 [always six digits post WW1] but that they ran to a course which was illogical and difficult to understand! The official number of the 980*** ]never getting to the 990's ***] gave way not to the 01 numbers, but to a series starting with 05 numbers. Taking official numbers to end at the number 980500, then using my number 0f 930735, we can see that 54265 men joined the navy between my time and the year May 1959, getting on for 5½ years i.e. 8350 approx  per year. The Annexe input into HMS Ganges was approximately 200 boys every six weeks giving an input of 1773 boys pa x 5½ years = 9533 boys over the period. Thus, of the 54265 people joining the navy, 9533 were boys at Ganges and the remainder, 44732 joined as boys elsewhere and into the adult navy branches/training establishments. Ganges took on average 17.5% of the intake. By 1976, Ganges number are at the 159900 stage.

If that CTB List could be tidied up, I would gladly remove this comment. On the web site proper, the order of these names/examples on stated pages could change as the webmaster adds more names to the list.

So, here is that Radio Suffolk outside broadcast, now of course, without the padding, much reduced in time from 3½ hours [0900-1230 27th August 2013] to a more manageable time frame, offered to you in NINE unequal sound bites of interviews only, with some divisions between interviews and music [for example] blurred!  The reprocessing is not intended to be an accurate science in this regards, but an exercise to help bring the 'bread and butter' story to you more quickly. Enjoy.  CLICK HERE {Moved to a new website!}.

PS. I understand that this was trashed by the Webmaster of HMS Ganges Association. Tut, tut! Is he just a silly little man or a jealous by-stander who fails to understand what communications are all about?  But then again, being a mere dabtoe and a 'china-graph driver' says it all!
