HABITABILITY IN NEW WARSHIPS POST 1949

Throughout my time in boats, we always had red lighting in the control room when shallow, at or ready to come to periscope depth, and double [chicane] curtains draped at the forward and after ends of the control room to stop 'white light'.  Half an hour before going on watch in these conditions, officers, sitting in the Wardroom, who were likely to man the periscopes {attack or search} wore glasses with red lenses to accustom their eyes to the dark in the sea above.
