NAVAL CUTS AND REORGANISATION

THE SECRET DOCUMENT PREPARED FOR THE FIRS SEA LORD'S SPEECH

Yes, a very familiar story, and history shows that both the Labour and the Tory parties are as bad as each other when it comes to lopping chunks off the defence budget.

Some years ago I wrote these pages

 where has it all gone?

The Navy's standing in the world 30 years ago

Not that many years ago, we had high profile admirals who were willing to "come clean" to the general public about the problems the cash-strapped navy were encountering and just a couple of these CHAMPIONS were

Admiral of the Fleet The Lord Hill-Norton attacking the Tories

and

Admiral Sir David Luce attacking Labour.

It seems that today the navy and the air force chiefs keep their heads well down, leaving any 'sniping' to be done by the army generals, currently over poor equipment provided to the army in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This story is about the closure of PORTLAND and SHEERNESS Dockyards, the ABOLITION of the NORE COMMAND, and the REORGANISAION OF THE NAVAL HOME AIR COMMAND.   On the 31st March 1961 the Nore Command closed after 209 years service. Admiral Sir Robin Durnford-Slater [the C-in-C of engaged forces at the Suez War in 1956] hauled down his Flag.
