Some big boys on this page including the EAGLE {GKYV} one of my old ships. She was the largest ship in the navy, although some in ARK ROYAL and the VANGUARD might argue about that - they would be wrong to do so: ask JANES!!
Also on this page is a coal burner called HMS FETLAR {GGJS].
She was based at Portland, and yes, berthed on ICP [Inner Coaling Pier]. I was in the SECOND TRAINING SQUADRON in HMS TINTAGEL CASTLE {MWMC} and always berthed just behind her on ICP.
As a treat and to relieve the boredom of day-running from Portland, I was seconded to FETLAR for a 2 week period to "see what the real navy was all about."
Her callsign led her killick sparker whose name I do not recall, to say to me when manning [or rather learning to man] Portland Exercise Wave [PXW] " [G] GET [G] GOING [J] JUNIOR [S] SPARKER", and I did - I loved it!! Incidentally, I wasn't a JUNIOR but a BOY TELEGRAPHIST. I was 16½ and the time was Spring 1955.
