Today in 2009, we all know what our medical experts earn and we do not begrudge them their financial status. Indeed, they earn precious little when compared to the media stars in the world of entertainment and sport, those latter earnings erring on a society debased and sick, geared by the "mighty dollar" oblivious to principles and morals which jointly used to describe civilisation.
WW1 exposed all to the horrors of war; the wounds inflicted; the shocking deaths and mutilations, but it was down to our field Doctors, Dentists and Nurses to try and make some sense out of the carnage and utter destruction and decimation.
It is not surprising that come 1926, that the vast majority of would-be medics shunned the armed forces and opted instead for the reformation and advance of science both socially and medically, which jointly, were eventually to lead to a national awareness and ultimately to the National Health Service.
This page tells of the situation in 1926 and the dire straits in which Their Lordships found themselves with the need to recruit medics from every branch and skills of the medical world. This file shows the wages of all in the medical profession in the mid-1920's and the likelihood of getting enough recruits to sustain the Hippocratic Oath and surgeon skills in the Royal Navy, and as equally important, the "foot soldiers" of the medical world, the nurses.
Have a look at these four files. A wonderful insight into the between-wars navy medical branches.
